Deciding What You Want
Other than the initial purchase of your home, there are few things as
exciting as a renovation project. Whether its a few changes to a couple
of rooms or a large-scale addition, there are decisions that you can
make upfront that will help insure success.
Purpose
The first key decision is to determine the main purpose of your
renovation. Most renovation projects are driven by an obvious want or
need, such as extra space, a kitchen or bathroom upgrade. But what is it
you hope to accomplish with this improvement? State your vision in terms
of how you want it to impact your lifestyle, not in the tangible sense
of moving a wall or replacing the cabinets. Do you need more privacy?
Better efficiency in the kitchen? A more pleasing traffic flow? A larger
area for entertainment? State your purpose on paper so you can share it
with your contractor and refer back to it if needed.
Future Needs
The next step is to determine what your future needs might be. Before
you draw up any plans consider your short-term and long-term needs.
Think about functionality and convenience. Are you adding an addition to
accommodate another child? What needs might you have as your children
grow? Will you need a home office soon? Are there any adaptations likely
for health reasons or to care for an elderly parent? |
